Why do social research? Most of you reading this textbook probably would answer. To fulfill a course requirement for my major. But let’s ask more broadly, Why have people set out to systematically study human society and behavior?” We need to subdivide this question into two parts. First, we should ask what subjects, what aspects of human society have motivated individuals to want to study them. Second, we need to know what methods have been developed to carry out systematic studies of human society.

This book is really about the second part of out question the methods of social research. However. It is essential to ask as well about the subjects of social research, for after all , if you don’t have a subject for research knowing about methods of research will not be useful, Hence, let’s begin by considering what types of subjects have motivated people to carry out social research. The aim of this book is both to understand research that has been carried out by others and to help you design and carry out research of your own.
