ELECTROPHORESIS THE MAIN VARIABLES

THE BASIC PROCEDURE

We will be looking at the various aspects of electrophoresis analyses over the following chapters, but to put you in the picture the process basically consists of the following key stages;

1. A DC electric current is supplied to electrodes.

2. This will then pass through a support

3. Samples are allied to the support as spots of bands.

4. Standard are usually visualized in some way.

5. The current then moves and separates the sample materials.

6. the samples are usually visualized in some way.

7. Samples may then be analyzed or processed further.

Most of the factors affecting electrophoresis separations are associated with three aspects; the sample itself, the electric field, and the medium in which electrophoresis takes place. The main factors are listen in Table; we will now look at these in turn.
