Introduction to materials science and engineering
Materials have always been an integral part of human culture and civilization.
For example, we designate periods in the past as the stone. Bronze, and ages.
Today’s advanced technologies rely on sophisticated materials. All of them use
devices, products, and systems that consist of materials. The engineer’s
expertise lies in adapting mantillas and energy to society’s needs.
The theme of this text is that the properties of materials depend their menial
structure. In turn the properties influence the performance of a material. Both
during manufacture and during service. To change the performance of a material,
we must motifs its internal structure. Conversely, if service conditions alter
a material structure, the engineer must anticipate that changes will occur in
properties and performance.
