SUMMER SOLSTICE

Seasons . As the Earth orbits the Sun , half of the Earth’s surface receives more of the Sun’s rays for six months of the year than the other half.

On June 21st, the North Pole is tilted towards the Sun and sun shines vertically overhead at the Tropic of Cancer , while the southern half has opposite conditions. This condition is called Summer Solistice. At this time the Northern hemisphere have mid-summer, here days are longer and shorter nights.

By December 22nd North Pole is now turned away from the Sun , and sun is vertically overhead at the Tropic of Capricorn . At this time known as the Winter Solstice, Southern hemisphere has mid-summer days while Northern hemisphere hasmid- cold season.

About March 21st and September 23rd , the Earth orbits, midway between the mid-summer and mid winter positions. On both these days , the midday sun shines vertically over head at the Equator, and both hemispheres have moderate temperature conditions. March 21st is Mid spring and September 23rd is mid autumn in the Northern hemisphere. These two days are called the Spring and autumn Equinoxes respectively. Days and night are equal in length.
