SUMMER SOLSTICE

Seasons . As the Earth orbits the Sun , half of the Earth’s surface receives more of the Sun’s rays for six months of the year than the other half.

On June 21^st, the North Pole is tilted towards the Sun and sun shines vertically overhead at the Tropic of Cancer , while the southern half has opposite conditions. This condition is called Summer Solistice. At this time the Northern hemisphere have mid-summer, here days are longer and shorter nights.

By December 22^nd North Pole is now turned away from the Sun , and sun is vertically overhead at the Tropic of Capricorn . At this time known as the Winter Solstice, Southern hemisphere has mid-summer days while Northern hemisphere hasmid- cold season.

About March 21^st and September 23^rd , the Earth orbits, midway between the mid-summer and mid winter positions. On both these days , the midday sun shines vertically over head at the Equator, and both hemispheres have moderate temperature conditions. March 21^st is Mid spring and September 23^rd is mid autumn in the Northern hemisphere. These two days are called the Spring and autumn Equinoxes respectively. Days and night are equal in length.
