Chapter I

Script

Urdu script

The Urdu script is an adaptation from the Arabic script, the notable features of which are as under:

1. Horizontally it is written from right to left and vertically, upside down.

2. Most of the letters are connectible with one another one either side, but some of them can only be joined to the preceding and not the succeeding letter.

3. These letters are divisible into fifteen distinct “shape-groups”. The letters falling in a group- might radically differ in sound from one another but are distinguishable by the ‘signs’ and ‘dots’ placed above or below each letter.

4. While forming words, most of the letters retain only a part of their full shapes, but are still recognizable because of the number of dots another signs, which remain intact and serve as a guide to the learner in identifying them.

5. the Lerner should, first try to acquaint himself with the full shape of each letter before proceeding any further.
